I do think that at least part of this was specifically designed to get people to either buy the disc box set or the cd when it is "officially" released as an actual cd. It is a business too after all.

But I don't mind at all for the so-called "ulterior" motives because, ulterior motives or not, I see it as Radiohead basically made an album available to us (albeit in somewhat low quality) several months before it was set to come out. I now look at it as a glorified and generous preview anyway (think: iTunes 30 second sample but 52.47 times better). There's a whole other half of the album that is still yet to be released! (the 8 "bonus" tracks that are included in the disc box set)

To sum up, I think it was a smart move both business-wise, and band/fan relationship-wise.

I've enjoyed Radiohead for many years. I was fortunate enough to see a show of theirs years ago at a venue in Edmonton. My favorite album would be between OK Computer and The Bends. I haven't heard their newest work yet.

excellent post. thanks for the song by song breakdown. ok comp loyalist or kid a loyalist, i say anyone who enjoys anything that is radiohead is okay by me!

someone mentioned to me that perhaps radiohead did this to hock their box set. what do you think?

anyway. you commented that you paid five bucks for it on my blog. that's fine by me. i just ridiculed that guy on the reuters clip for pretending to state that radiohead itself, is only worth five or six bucks.

very uncool.

well done on the review. way better than mine. All I Need is still my favorite track, but House of Cards is coming up strong. It's pretty crazy the way that happens.

I don't think you have to sacrifice solid singles when creating an accessible and artful album as a whole (see OK Computer for that), but I've always felt that Radiohead is much more geared to the listener who takes albums as the entirety of a work, rather than those - I'll call them casual listeners - who prefer to listen to a single and forget about the rest of the album.

you definitely made a good point on the accessibility of the album though, and the gloom that seems to embody Radiohead, but I think this is one of the most optimistic things they've done, which as we've discussed may indicate the end of Radiohead's existence as we know it.

You might find this sad... but I've never listened to Radiohead before!

Everyone around me is talking about them, though, so I will most definitely check them out.

I still think the “LOC” (line of convergence? or conflict? ah...it's "control") is The Bends/OK Computer and Kid A/Amnesiac because OK Computer is the last time they were reaching their full potential and talent of making melodies.

With Pablo Honey, they were still melodic I suppose, but they hadn’t mastered it like they did on The Bends and OK Computer. I believe it was after the tour for OK Computer that Thom Yorke inexplicably felt he had “completely had it with melody. [He] just wanted rhythms.”

But I do see your point…clearly. I guess I could argue that Kid A is almost equally revered by all? But I know it’s not true...it's at least not nearly as loved as OK Computer.

hmmm…but Pablo Honey has always been viewed as a…lesser album. “Pablo Honey/The Bends fan” just doesn’t have the same street cred does it (no matter how much that "Dan" character above likes it)?

And Sally…
That is probably the saddest thing I’ve heard so far this week. Get some Radiohead in your life! I could send you the files by land, by air, by internet, snail mail, I could sing you the freakin’ songs! (if none of the other options work out…even then I don’t think it’s gonna happen.)

Please do contact me if you need a rough guide on an intro to them (or…the actual songs…just make up for it by buying their latest and attending concerts, which I’m sure you’ll want to do). I have free mp3’s of a sample of my favorites on my last entry! Please start by downloading those! Now!
